PSC Ski Trips for 2019: What you need to know!

Heads up, everybody! Our 2019 skiing schedule is set and sign-ups will commence with the May 10 club meeting, so get ready!

The Trips

Snowshoe, WV – Jan. 6-11:
Susan Crockett is repeating her popular mid-week trip to what is arguably the best skiing destination in our region. New for 2019, the trip is expanded to five nights lodging and four days skiing, and we’ll be enjoying modern accommodations at Rimfire Lodge, located just across the village plaza from the ski slopes.

Bryce, VA – ski racing clinic – Jan. 16-17:  Cathy Margiotta will be our trip leader and instructor for this reprise of last year’s ski racing clinic at Bryce Resort. We had tentatively scheduled this trip for mid-February but moved it up so members could prep for ski racing opportunities on our Steamboat, Big Sky, and Sunday River trips. Steamboat and Big Sky both offer NASTAR racing, and PSCers will have the opportunity to compete with other clubs in our council in the BRSC race at Sunday River.

Steamboat, CO – Jan. 26–Feb. 2 or Jan. 26–Feb. 9: I’m organizing this trip to one of our club’s favorite western destinations, with an option to stay on for a second week. Space is limited and I expect the one-week slots to fill up fast, so you may want to consider staying on for the full two weeks. We’ll be on hand for the First Friday Artwalk in Steamboat Springs during week one, and the first three days of the legendary Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival during week two.

Big Sky, MT – Feb. 23-Mar. 2: Bill Bryan is headed off to the wilds of Montana to ski one of the largest and least crowded resorts in the country, and he would be delighted if a whole bunch of us would join him. Slopeside lodging is a plus, and rental SUVs will offer flexibility in getting around when we’re not on the slopes. With sufficient interest, a day at Bridger Bowl could be an option.

Sunday River, ME – Mar. 2-9: Dorrie Thompson will lead the PSC delegation on the Blue Ridge Ski Council’s annual Winterfest trip. Several of us had a great time on the 2018 BRSC trip to Stowe, and I expect this trip will be just as much fun. Sunday River offers a good mix of terrain (including 30% green and 36% blue) laid out across eight interconnected peaks. To avoid a 14-hour bus ride from the Richmond area, we plan to break up the trip by driving to Baltimore on Saturday night and then meeting other BRSC clubs at the bus pick-up point north of the city on Sunday morning. We are awaiting final pricing details from BRSC and hope to have more complete information available by May 10.

For more details about each of these trips, see the trip flyers which are posted on our website. Note that Big Sky and Sunday River overlap on March 2 (a conflict we were not able to avoid), so you can only do one or the other of those trips—unless you can figure out how to get yourself from Montana on March 2 to either Baltimore or Sunday River on March 3.

How to Sign Up

Capacity on our trips is limited, particularly for those involving air travel. In recent years our most popular western trips have filled up quickly. Last year, Snowmass sold out in just 23 hours and Banff took only a week. We expect demand to be at least as strong this year.

Registration for our trips is first-come first-serve. To give everyone a fair shot at signing up, we plan to open all of them up for registration at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, coinciding with our May club meeting. Trip captains will be on hand to present their trips, collect deposits, and assist with sign-ups. If you can’t make it to the club meeting, that’s OK; you can sign up online through our website at peninsulaskiclub.com. Trip listings will be posted there in the coming days, but will not be enabled for registration until the appointed time.

If you are one of the very few members without Internet access who lives outside the area, you can mail a check to the address indicated on the trip flyer. Deposits received by mail on or before May 10 will be treated as if they were paid at the May 10th meeting, but only for the handful of members who fall into this category.

No matter how you register, your membership must be current in order to sign up for any of our trips! If you have not renewed, you can do that either online (preferred) or by mailing in the membership form included in this newsletter. To renew, sign up for trips, or make payments through the website, you must first login, so be sure that you know your username and password and that you are able to connect successfully from your computer or mobile device(s). If you are unable to get into the website, contact webmaster@peninsulaskiclub.com for assistance.

What about Ikon Passes?

Snowshoe, Steamboat, Big Sky, and Sunday River are all covered by Alterra Mountain Company’s Ikon Pass and Ikon Base Pass. PSC members who hold Ikon passes will receive non-skier pricing for these four trips. If you plan to do a lot of skiing next season at these or other Ikon resorts, the passes may offer savings over the cost of separate lift tickets for each trip. Ikon passes can be purchased as one of the lift ticket options on our Steamboat trip, but otherwise (or to secure a military discount) you will need to purchase passes directly through
ikonpass.com. Provisions vary with the destination and type of pass, so consider your options carefully. Ikon passes are non-refundable; we therefore recommend that you not purchase passes in anticipation of PSC trips until you have secured slots on those trips.

Here’s looking forward to an exciting and successful 2019 ski season!
