Stompin' at Stumpy...and more!
Join
Tom & Susan Crockett and
Steve Liberman as we explore
Stumpy Lake Natural Area in Virginia Beach.
Stumpy Lake is recognized as an
eBird Hotspot, and since October 9 is
October Big Day, Tom and Susan will be looking for as many different birds as they can find and would love to have a few other PSCers to help out—no experience required, although it would be helpful if you can distinguish between a squirrel and a bird. They'll have extra binoculars on hand, but bring your own if you have a good pair.
Steve's primary goal is to wander around aimlessly, and he claims to be quite good at that. He is looking forward to having PSC friends to keep him company (and out of trouble) on the trails.
There's also a canoe and kayak launch, so if you want to bring your own watercraft and paddle around, that's an option, too. For golfers,
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is right next door if you'd like to stick around and hit some balls later (book your tee time in advance).
We'll meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Stumpy Lake Natural Area parking lot, but after that the itinerary is deliberately open-ended. Go birding, go hiking, go paddling, or just hang out with fellow PSCers. Tom and Susan are planning on a full day of birding, likely moving on in the afternoon to
Back Bay NWR or other locations on the
Seashore to Cypress Birding and Wildlife Trail before reconvening at Steve and Judy's house to go out for dinner in the early evening. We welcome PSCers and their family members for any or all of these activities, but we request that you register or RSVP by October 7 so we know who to expect and how many might be on hand for dinner.
